buy custom U.N Rights Violation essay Introduction Violence refers to deliberate use of corporal power or force, to threaten or actually harm, another person, oneself, or on a group of people like children or women resulting to death, injury, mal-development, or psychological distortion. Violence against children is a global issue that results to public-unhealthiness. Though injustice and poverty victims have had difficulty being understood, historically, none of them has had more difficulty if compared to the plight of children. Violence against children takes place in various forms for instance physical injuries, negligence, or psychological torture. This happen at different levels and the perpetrators include individuals, institutions, households, and the society. This essay therefore establishes the state of children rights and the major contributors to violence against children rights in the global context. Violence against children takes place worldwide but the statistics may vary from one region to another. For instance, countries such as India, Pakistan, and Nepal tend to report more issues on children rights violation including child labor, sexual abuse, and child trafficking. India has been said to have the largest number of working children. However, these statistics could be misleading given that state administrators may give low numbers to protect images of their countries. A recent research in eight Asian nations discovered that 33 to 50% of the sex workers were the same previous victims of child abuse (Brett, 2009). One basic human rights principle laid down in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. Children have been assigned special protection by the UN legal framework. Nevertheless, there are no strong legal mechanisms to protect this right. In addition, international law and local legislations are not homogeneous and this leads to conflict of interests. Childrens rights protection under international treaty law can be traced back to the first Declaration of the Rights of the Child adopted by the League of Nations in 1924, which was a brief document containing only five principles by which member were invited to be guided in the work of child welfare. Children enjoy protection by way of general human rights provisions, and their relevance should not be underestimated. The U.N has continued to guard the rights of children under four principles, namely; childrens right to equality, the best interest of the child, the childrens right to life and development and the respect for childrens own views (Committee on the Rights of the Child, 2005). However, these provisions only remain in papers as a number of states continue to abuse them as demonstrated by the rising cases of child trafficking, and child labor among other vices. Children Rights Violation Children are said to be every countrys future and for that reason; the United Nations (UN) members in 2002, undertook to conform to eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by the year 2015 with six of the said goals directly associated with children. All these goals that are strongly associated with the commitment made by all governments of the UN General Assembly at the 2002 Special Session on Children in 2002. All nations promised to work with the goal of promoting and protecting the rights of every child. A study conducted by the Convention on the Rights of the Child on behalf of the UN in 2001 emphasized on the rights of children to personal and physical integrity. The study also outlined Countries responsibilities in protecting children from all kinds of mental and physical violence such as sexual, exploitation, or demeaning punishment (Detrick, 1999). It is however hard to implemen these measures in developing countries due to high levels of poverty, whose remedy at times would be engaging children in forced labor to put food on table. In addition, severity of HIV/AIDS affects ability of parent to feed their children and this leave rare option for restricting child labor. The UN member countries are obliged to pass protective measures in order to ensure that no children rights are violated and if any is, they should ensure that the victims get the assistance and support necessary for recovery. In the Pacific and the East Asia Region, numerous regional pledges have been made and continue to be implemented at different levels in order to combat childrens problems of sexual exploitation, abuse, and trafficking. Children rights violations are mostly circumstantial and are contributed by elements that may be either positive or negative. Violation of childrens rights is not a new phenomenon and recent worldwide development especially the technological advancements have greatly challenged the efforts of the UN and other stakeholders to stop this criminality. Various global economic features and political affiliations have affected children protection and well-being. The aspect of rapid urbanization is good for many economies and livelihoods but it also contributes greatly to violation of childrens rights (UNICEF, 2001). This is because; urbanization may tend to erode social security systems of families and communities, at the same time, slacken import barriers, and improve transport and communications networks facilitating cross-national movements and thus encouraged illegal activities such as child trafficking. Some nations have violated childrens rights in the name of patriotism. Children are forced into making sacrifices in order to protect their country. These children engage in risky national activities, for instance, in some developing countries and other politically unstable nations such as Sierra Leone, Sudan and Rwanda, children were used as spies and war soldiers during wars all in the name of patriotism (Van Bueren, 1998). Nevertheless, at times political set ups do not recruit children in their troop. State of a country may also make a child to develop interest in becoming a soldier at early age. Vice is political influence in recruiting children in military troops. Violation of children rights has however been greatly contributed to by negative societal factors. For instance, the main targets for children violators and other abusers are the children from marginalized ethnic groups and financially unfortunate families who are subjected to many types of social segregation. This is because these children live in poor and politically unstable regions and they face numerous financial adversities. Due to their unfortunate nature, some of these children live in slums, streets and in socially segregated groups. Some ethnic minorities are illegal immigrants and thus, they lack most certifications, causing them to lack the necessary access to legal employment, education, and legal migration channels. This unfortunate lot of childrens right to safe delivery, good maternal health, proper nutrition, medical heath (Van Bueren, 1998). Stigmatization of HIV/AIDs born children by families and the society due to ignorance and poverty by the society strongly contributes to the continuous discrimination, violence and abuse and consequently causing the children to seek alternative livelihoods and becoming vulnerable to being violated (UNICEF, 2001). In addition, most HIV/AIDs infected and affected children from developing countries have been orphaned and are thus under kinship care, mainly under the aged and weak persons. These caretakers have other problems and are thus incapable of caring and providingg for these children. Having no strong person as guardian makes the children to be very susceptible to abuse and violence. The U.N has funded and supported programs that can help to strengthen work on advocating and researching on the key causes societal issues including HIV/AIDS and at the same time, assists the infected and affected children to access to basic services such as education, healthcare, and protection against violators. In the year 2000, about 2.3 million children who are below the age of 15 from the developing world have continually become orphans because of HIV/AIDs related mortalities with one child dying every 14 seconds (UNICEF, 2001). However, there are still the biggest hurdles that surround such good initiatives. There is vast corruption especially in developing countries that make monetary allocation have little impact in rescuing the condition of children. Political instability in some nations is also a huge contributor to violation of childrens rights. War-torn countries go through many problems that affect its citizens especially children directly in an enormous and unprecedented way. For instance, in war times, many children have been wounded, murdered or taken away from their families and communities. Due to wars, many children have been orphaned and have exploited sexually or through military recruitment. The girl child has especially been gravely affected by war. Greed for control of landmines and production of small arms and weapons also threatens lives of children every day. This is because conflicts in many regions are caused by such economic greed, interest and the desire to have power over valuable natural resources (Brett, 2009). This kind of interest in some industries is responsible for stimulating wars that bring dreadful violations of childrens rights by causing them to suffer mal-nutrition due to low production of food. In the 1996 UN General Assembly, Machel gave a report on awareness and collection of information on the childrens plight that are affected by armed conflict. Conclusion Children have the right to health, right to nutrition and the right to education. In addition, children also deserve to be protected; they deserve to be free from brutality and mistreatment and they deserve to have a safe and caring environment. Some children have the chance to enjoy these rights while others are amongst the most susceptible groups in the society. Some progress by individual families, the society, and concerned organizations have been made in the struggle against children trafficking and sexual exploitation of children (Brett, 2009). These positives fight against violating the rights of children has been evidenced worldwide with the increase in consciousness and acknowledgment of the issues by government heads. Other key decision makers worldwide and the general public are also rallying the efforts of fighting violation of childrens rights. Children globally have however continued to be violated through trafficking on a daily basis and the trend of these victimization and maltreatment incidents is continually increasing. Most of these violations of childrens rights have been observed in the disadvantaged countries, communities, and families. This means that more than anything else, the vices are heightened by the poverty, ignorance, political instability, diseases such as HIV/AIDs and discrimination. All these contributors are negative aspects of the society. In order for the society to solve curb childrens rights violation, they first need to deal with improving and eradicating these aspects (Detrick, 1999). Otherwise, children rights violation will continue to exist at both the local and international levels. Buy custom U.N Rights Violation essay

Has the Euro Been a Failure Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Has the Euro Been a Failure - Essay Example Conversely, those states that have bandwagon together in the hopes that joining the European Union will provide the prosperity that the fabricators have promised have found out that the benefits are oftentimes outweighed by the risks. For instance, in the beginning, phases of European Union integration, there was a subset of requirements that each of the member states must ensure that they ascribed to as a determining factor of being eligible to participate in and share the â€Å"benefits† of European Union membership. However, as time has progressed and the economic situation across the continent has substantially deteriorated, many of these determining factors have weighed heavily on some of the weakest member states. The article refers to these as â€Å"PIIGS† (Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece, and Spain). Although these economies are suffering from the pains of continental integration, their central banks, and economic institutions are beholden to upholding the demands that European Union membership has placed upon them. In this way, the needs of the nation are subjected to the demands of EU membership. The authors discuss the most prominent reason/factor which caused the European Union to integrate so hastily was the fact that European leaders, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, were in a rush to ensure that the torturous pains that Europe had experienced within the past 60 years would never again be repeated. Although the author states that this oversight was one that was born primarily out of a desire to ensure the peace and prosperity of the European block for future generations, this estimation is one that looks at the formation of the European integration through rose tinted glasses (Bergsten 18).

Coursework for Quantitative Methods Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Coursework for Quantitative Methods - Essay Example The competitive markets will equalize the price of a similar good in the two countries when prices are expressed in similar currencies. For instance, a certain Television Set priced at 750 Dollars in Canada should cost 500 Dollars in United States when the exchange rate between the two countries is 1.50. Economists use two Purchasing Power Parity versions: Relative Purchasing Power Parity and Absolute Purchasing Power Parity. Absolute PPP is when the price level across countries is equalized. For instance, the exchange rate of Canada and US is computed by dividing the price level of Canada by that of the US. Assuming the exchange rate is 1.3 CAD per USD from 1.5 CAD per USD today. PPP theory implies the Canadian dollar will appreciate as USD depreciated. The relative Purchasing Power Parity refers to the degree of changes in the price level commonly known as the inflation rate. It says that appreciation rate of a currency is similar to the difference in the rate of inflation between the home and the foreign country. Assuming the inflation rate for Canada and US are 1% and 3% respectively, The US currency will depreciate against the Canada Dollar by 2% annually. Relative PPP withstands when the difference in inflation is very large. The concept is related to effect of trade and market arbitrage on the prices of similar products exchanged in multiple markets. In markets that are efficient, there must be a single price of those commodities in respective of their trading areas. The law of one price is also applicable to factor market. However, since the costs of the transaction and transport are positive, the law needs reformulation when applicable to spatial trade. Assuming we have two markets (Liverpool and Chicago) trading wheat and the wheat are transported from Chicago to Liverpool. The difference in the prices of wheat between the two markets should be similar to the cost of the transaction

Black people Income Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Black people Income - Research Paper Example Also, wealth is critical in enabling families to weather emergencies and move along a path of long-term financial opportunity and security. As such, extreme wealth inequality especially between races implies that a disadvantaged race will be unable to benefit from opportunities associated with wealth and this will hamper the community’s economic growth and that of the nation as a whole (Institute on Assets and Social Policy 1). Statistics by government agencies and non-government agencies show that there is a huge wealth inequality between black people compared to the white people in the United States. This research paper will discuss this inequality and why this inequality exists and what are the possible ways of closing the racial income gap. Statistics on Racial Income Inequality The black people in the United States continue to earn far less income compared to the white people. According to the statistics released by the United States Census Bureau, per-capita income of th e black people in 2008 was $18,054, which was just 57.9 percent that of the white people which stood at $28,502. While this was a slight improvement over the 56.4 percent reported in 2007, it was down the 2005 statistics which as 59.3 percent (Christie para 1). The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics also indicate that the white people earn a median of $756 per week, which is 25 percent more compared to the black people who earn $607 weekly. In 2011, available data indicate that the median income for the black households was approximately $32,000. This amount was 61.7 percent of the median income of white households in the same year. What is more worrying is the fact that this was about the same percentage in 1970 which stood at 60.9 percent. This implies that there has been virtually no change in regard to income between the whites and the backs (Institute on Assets and Social Policy 5). This lack of notable change comes as a surprise considering that there have been visible i ndicators about the improvement of black people income situation. Factors or Causes of the Income Inequality between the Black People and White People Numerous studies have found out that there are a significant number of causes or factors contributing to low income among the blacks compared to the whites. It has been found out there are contemporary and historical causes that have resulted to this situation (Barsky, Bound, Charles and Lupton 663). The situation of income disparity is further compounded by the fact there us a very unequal income distribution among black households; it is even more unequal compared to the income distribution among white households. It should be noted that there some black people who earn pretty high income, even higher income than some of the top white households. This can be attributed to the benefits they have obtained in the recent years (Oliver and Shapiro 78). However, extremely large black population segment earn very low incomes. The weakening of labor unions and the long-term minimum wage reduction are some of the factors that have harmed the income of many black people. Other factors such as mass incarceration of black men, as well as the consequent exclusion from mainstream economy have significantly hampered black

Although the sport not making interest for student to join at pass time, but nowaday, that has changed, many student was take part in regular physical activity since the benefit of healthy was attach important now. So a University was require the University sports executive in relation to their project for developing a new University Sports facility. The executive is impressed with most of the work that has been done but has concerns about the viability of the project. It has a problem that these students who study in University may use other facilities nearer their home rather than join the new University facility, because more of them live at home than University hostel. This problem may make University bear a high expensive because of lack of member going join their new sport facibility, so they need to investigate a potential secondary segment of clients for the sports facility other than the full-time students for incerease their revenue to recover the high expensive. For this goal, the University sport executive need to make a reseach or report of detail and justification of secondary segment, the specific macro environmental issues in the market which will bring the opportunities or threats. Beside that, the promotion and offering of the new University Sports facility is need to plan for attract the new member from outside of the University and also giving a reasonable price to new member for this new University Sports facility . 2.0 Content 2.1 Detail and justification of the secondary segment Since the University worry about there may lack of their student to joining their new University sport facilities, so they wish can aim to the second segment to rises thier revenue for it.The second segment is target to the ppl who are age 38-56 years old, adult. This is target to the person who are on the way to retire or already retired. Demography refers to the study of the human populations in terms of size, age, race, occupation, density, location, and density. It is very important to undestand the demographic environment because it is very helpful in deivide the human populations into the market segment and how they going target into which market. For example, according to the born of the years,we can saw there have 3 generations before this, such as baby boomers, who are born between 1946 and 1964, generation X, who are born between 1965 and 1976, and generation Y, who are born between 1977 and 1994. The generation of the baby boomers are the larger number of this 3 generation. So if the marketing segmatation can include this generation and that may bring a high revenue for the market because they are become mature nowaday and getting a stable job and may reaching they higher income earning in this many year they work before. They would like to spend and making purchases when thier income is getting high than ot her new generation. According to all of this, they also treat their healthy very important because of the larger age and willing to pay for their health care, so if the new Universitiy sport facibilities can segment to this generation and it will bring a opportunities for the University. Economic environment refer what is the way that make the potential consumer would like to make purchases and willing to pay for the products or services. Change in major economic variables such as income, cost of living, interest rates , and savings and borrowing patterns have a large impact on the marketplace.(Kotler,Armstrong 2004) For example, if the personal income of every worker is rising then their purchasing power will increasing and would like to make payment for the products and services, it is provide opportunities to market. In other hand, if the economic fall down and getting bad, such as increasing of the unemployment rates, then the money will be hold by the consumer to survive and reduce the purchasing power. Natural environment is about the natural resources that a company uses as inputs and the possible of their marketing activities may cause pollution to the natural or no. Threat for this enviroment will bring to the firm or company when their marketing activities are increasing the pollution, cause the shortages of raw materials seriously and increasing governmental intervention because of the complaint from the public sector. All of this will affect the companys reputation and make it hard to getting their goal or mission because the intervention of the government to their business activities. The technological environment is one of the fastest changing factors in the macroenvironment and no one can ignore this. That is very important to understand the changes of technological because competitors will exploit it sooner or later, with implications for your product and its market. (Brassington, Stephen) Technological advance in a company can help and give opportunity for them to create the new markets and new uses for products and maximum their profit in market. Another advantages that getting technological in advance are can negotiating the right of the skill or technological right and development of the marketable product with successful from it before the competition. The political environment is strongly affect the marketing decisins and it include the laws and regulation set by the government that limit the business action in social. That is very important for the company to be aware of these restrictions in this market. It always cause the threat for the company since the law and regulation often limit thier activities and they need to making decision for a long time period to fulfill in the right situation. 2.3 Outline of the new university sport facilitiess offer The benefits that the new university sport facilities going to offer to the member can attract the interest of the people to join whether the main objective of it is improvement of healthy. The offer provided just is a activity that influece and increase the motivation of them to join the new universitiy sport facilities. Here are the offers that provide to the new members: Bonus for introduce of new member Lastest model of sport facilities provided Free professional coach teaching Security Free safety insurance Free try for a day Discout of member fees 2.4 Pricing strategy In this new University sport facilities, the amount of the fees to the new member is very important because it may decide how many people willing to join depend to the price. The pricing strategy that use must satisfying the consumer need and enable to pay from every one. The market-penetration pricing can using for it and it is setting a low price with provide high quality of the product and service. Roxana’s Search for Identity in Daniel Defoe’s Roxana Essay -- Roxana

Roxana’s Search for Identity in Daniel Defoe’s Roxana In all of Daniel Defoe's major works, his characters always feel a need to narrate their history, specifically through the adventures they had rather than any description of who they were. Some people would suggest that this compulsion to give such an account reveals a burden of guilt the narrator is trying to free him or herself from, and an attempt to feel more secure in terms of identity. In the article, "Why Roxana Can Never Find Herself," Peter New offers his theory to explain why Defoe's characters, and Roxana in specific, are unable to obtain any real security of identity, even though they employ this method to achieve it. In New's definition, a secure identity can only be achieved through a full acknowledgment and sense of pride in ones history. Roxana does try to define herself in terms of what she has done rather than who she is, which is an acknowledgment of her past. However, she tells her story because she wants to gain a sense of both freedom and security, but the two are mutually exclusive. If Roxana writes as a penitent, she is choosing to be free from her past, or to "disown" it, thereby losing her security of identity. However, if she chooses security and owns up to all that she has been, then she can never be freed from her burden of guilt. Thus she is both trying to "embrace and to reject [her] own history" (318). We see this tendency towards confusio n and contradiction in Roxana all throughout the novel. She is constantly rationalizing her actions in the past, but immediately following that with a description of her feelings of guilt and regret. In New's interpretation, it is this tendency which proves that Roxana can never really find herself becaus... ...this theory to show that although Roxana is desperately trying to define herself and discover her true identity, ironically, her selves will never be able to be integrated. His final conclusion about Roxana's character is that She is condemned to search for an identity in the story of her selves and be unable ever to find it, because she both wants and does not want to be legion (329). This article presents an interesting, and valid argument about the character of Roxana in all her complexities. However, I think other arguments could be as plausible, depending on your viewpoint of Roxana. Are we to see her as insecure in her identity and confused as to what she wants? And if so, can we ever really know her true character if she cannot ever know her self? Work Cited New, Peter. "Why Roxana Can Never Find Herself." The Modern Language Review 91 (1996): 317-329.

Politics and the American People Essay

Being able to marry your most beloved one is the happiest and luckiest thing in this world. However, not everyone can do this because of the Defense of Marriage Act which defines marriage as being between a man and a woman. Same-sex couples have to suffer a lot in order to fight for their rights and their happiness.Theyare denied equal access to all the benefits, rights, and privileges provided by federal law to married couples. If we think of it from a humanity standpoint, everyone has the right to pursue happiness. Therefore, same-sex marriage should be legal. The reason for making gay marriage legal is equality in citizenship. Despite their sexual attraction, homosexual individuals must be treated in the same way as everyone. They should not only have the same rights in housing, jobs, social benefits but also in marriage. Lately, a Republican Senate, Mark Kirk, has become the second Republican senator to endorse same sex marriage. â€Å"Same-sex couples should have the right to civil marriage. Our time on this earth is limited, I know that better than most,† Kirk said. â€Å"Life comes down to who you love and who loves you back– government has no place in the middle.† President Obama is also a supporter of gay marriage. â€Å"Not only is it right and fair, but also consistent with our Constitution,† he said. â€Å"It is very important for us to remember we’re a nation in which everybody’s supposed to be equal before the law.† President’s statement is the hope for LGBT, Les Gay Bisexual Transgender community, to be treated equally by the law. Legalizing gay marriage is the way to show support and sympathy to homosexual individuals. Most Americans who think same-sex relations are wrong believe being gay or lesbian is a choice. Those who do not think same-sex relations are wrong think being gay or lesbian is something people cannot change. Senator Rob Portman, from Ohio, a co-sponsor of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, now supports same-sex marriage after learning his son was gay. â€Å"I have come to believe that if two people are prepared to make a lifetime commitment to love and care for each other in good times and in bad, the government shouldn’t deny them the opportunity to get married,† he said. His son, Will, told his parents that being gay was not a choice, but the part of who he is, , and that’s who he’d been that way for as long as he could remember. Most of the homosexual individuals feel unconfident in front of the publicity due to the sexual attraction, and they feel lonely because of the isolation. Publicity should give them confidence for being who they are to lead on a bright life. Moreover, having a feeling for someone isn’t a sin. Hence, gender doesn’t matter in a relationship, gay couples also need support from the others. Generally, there’re a lot of people who oppose gay marriage because they think it’s weird and immoral. It’s rare, but doesn’t mean weird and unhappy. Homosexual individuals are just a small amount of us, but they are nothing different from us but their love to the same sex. They also take care of their partner well, love each other and live an ordinary life. How people can use immorality as an excuse to prevent the others seeking for their happiness?Let’s take Elton John and David Furnish as an example. John is the well-known musician who is used to addict to alcohol and drugs, but his partner, David, helped him to get rid of those dangerous addictions and live a better life. They formalized their relationship in December 2005, and they also adapted a boy in 2010. It’s the obvious proof that homosexual individuals can live a normal life as same-sex marriage legalized. In spite of one’s gender and sex’s attraction, everyone should be respected and treated equally in marriage. So, they can live a normal life and be happy with their beloved one. More and more Senate Democratand Republican support same-sex marriage. The battles over same-sex couples marrying still continues, and the number of Americans who support same-sex marriage is increasing. From what I see, if there’s any reason for fighting for gay marriage, they must be love, equal, sympathy and because we’re human.

The Worlds Impact on Trade essays

The Worlds Impact on Trade essays In the early fifteenth century the way of transportation was via ship. This transatlantic world called for other means of survival than just food alone. Therefore, people needed more to stay alive and pleased. Ships helped out with many tasks including getting from one part of the world to the other, discovery of new territories, cultures, foods, and goods, but most importantly, it helped out with trade. Through the help of the ship, brave sailors, and newly discovered merchandise, trade helped Europe dominate and expand over the world. It is difficult to comprehend how Europe became so powerful when the view of the globe was so narrow. They did this through purchasing goods, moving them to another territory where they were not known and selling them for a profit. This was known as mercantilism and the Europeans did it with much eagerness. By the sixteen hundreds, the Europeans covered most of the shores of America and came into contact with Africa. Africa was a home to wealthy kingdoms, primarily in West Africa, based on a trade of gold for salt. West Africa needed salt and North Africa wanted gold. Europe came to be involved with Africa in what started out as wanting a part of the gold, but ended up overpowering the cities in Africa. They took the feeble citizens as slaves to sell for trade, and they succeeded in doing so. Some citizens volunteered as indentured servants thinking that they were going to be paid, but it ended up as a rude awakening for them. Slaves, sadly, provided cheap and reliable lab or to provide commodities for the west European markets. About ten million slaves from Africa ended up in the New World plantations, while many more were captured and died on the way over. If there was a profit to be made, the people were interested. The Europeans economy changed from a large negotiating financial system to a moneymaking system. Merchandise from all over circulated through Europe and they...

UNHAPPY RELATIONSHIPS IN HEMINGWAY'S LIFE AND FICTION - Essay Example He believed in omitting extra details as a way of strengthening his stories. He compared this to an iceberg. Just like only the top 1/8th of an iceberg can be seen above the water with the rest remaining below the surface providing it with its momentum and dignity, Hemingway believed his stories should follow the same structure. Although some critics loved him, others said his stories were shallow. â€Å"He had no sympathy for women, they said, portraying them either as manhood-destroying bitches or as mere objects of sexual domination† (Lynn, 1987, p. 10). A close reading of his stories reveals not only the messages the author intended to send, but also some insights as to the way he felt about things. Throughout his life, Hemingway struggled in his relationships with others, particularly women, and these struggles can be traced through many of his works including â€Å"Hills Like White Elephants†, â€Å"The Short and Happy Life of Francis Macomber† and â€Å"S nows of Kilimajaro.† There are numerous similarities between the short story â€Å"Hills Like White Elephants† and Hemingway’s life at the time he wrote it. According to Baker (1969), Hemingway wrote this story during the 100 day separation period between himself and his mistress Pauline that his wife Hadley insisted upon before granted a divorce. This responsibility was defended by a conception of the natural law, which is fundamentally incompatible with the practice of homosexual marriage rites. It shall be shown that these objections are baseless and cannot be shown to have any philosophical merit, especially since their philosophical histories are contradictory—meaning that these criticisms are mutually exclusive and are mutually incorrect. The first point taken to support the thesis that the government has no moral responsibility to ban same-sex marriage is that there is a history of normality when it comes to the practice of gay marriage. The objector cites the time of Plato as proof that homosexuality has been, for ages, been a widespread practice, and in a variety of different cultural contexts. However, even a cursory knowledge of Plato’s thoughts on love, contained in the dialogue Symposium, would reveal that Plato, like Aristotle, thought that homosexuality was an affront to nature, and hence, natural law. In the eighth book of the Symposium, a speaker considers â€Å"how to have legislation banning homosexual acts, masturbation, and illegitimate procreative sex widely accepted. He then states that this law is according to nature† (Pickett). Plato and Aristotle, arguably the two wisest men in the history of Ancient Greece, both expressed a sharp distaste for the unnatural practice of homosexualityà ¢â‚¬â€the former of whom expressed his belief in a ban on the practice in the Ideal State. In addition to the incidental philosophical objection to the practice, there is also a logical objection to be made to this argument as well. The writer here seems to suggest that because
